There are few psychological roller coasters that rival playing 18 holes of golf. At the most elite levels of the sport, it is the professionals able to keep it together mentally who come out on top.
But this principle isn’t applicable only to the top golfers on the planet. It’s just as relevant — if not more relevant — to the recreational player merely trying to find some consistency in his game. For many of us, a few bad shots seem able to derail an entire round because they get us so angry, frustrated and depressed that we can’t regain mental composure. Suddenly, all the work we’ve done to improve our games physically goes out the window just because we can’t get control of ourselves emotionally.
If you truly want to develop a consistent golf game, you need to take control of both sides — the physical and the emotional. Let’s leave the physical part aside for now and talk instead about the aspect that’s often more difficult to conquer. Integrate these five tenets into your mental game and learn how to successfully ride the rocky waters of a round and come out the other side smiling.
