There are two levers in the backswing — one involving the arms and the other involving the wrists. The arms form a lever in the swing, allowing the club to go back around your body as they lift the club. As your body turns, it is helpful to reach with your arms to provide the maximum possible arc, which gives you width and time to generate power. If your arms are not around your body enough, you cannot bring the club into the ball on the proper angle. This improper angle will rob you of distance. If your arms have not lifted enough, your swing arc will be smaller than it could be, meaning less potential for power.
